Andrés Valdés

Andrés Valdés, the professor of pantomime and mime from Ljubljana, was born in Havana, Cuba. He first preformed in front of the large audience at the age of four as the dancer in a circus. His cooperation with the groups which were performing in front of the audience has continued ever since. At the beginning he was participating in many children's events around the world, as the dancer-actor. After graduating at the acting academy, he started performing around the world. First, he travelled to Mexico, where he was very successful at performing in several cultural institutions. In the year 1956, he set off to America and participated as the comedian in the Cuban group of performing actors. After working there for two years, he decided to go to Europe. In Paris he became the student of one of the worlds' best known pantomime artist Etieene Decroux, and for a while, the assistant of the mime Marcel Marceau. In the year 1964, the path led him to Ljubljana, where he remained ever since. He introduced into the Slovenian cultural space the unknown branch of art- the modern pantomime. With his knowledge and experience, he initiated a long term process of enriching and expanding the frames of Slovenian cultural space, also as the movement advisor in many Slovenian theatres. Since the year 1982 he has been accompanied by his student and, later on, the assistant and co-worker Jana Kovaè Valdés. From this year onwards he added to his repertoire a series of successful performances, intended mainly for the adult public:

"Black and White", "Something for Fun, Something for Real", "Duets", and as a result of his pedagogical success, the performance "Quiet, we are laughing", in which participated seven of his students.

The last several years he has been engaged in creating performances for children. By understanding children's psycho and vivid imagination, he created many performances for pre-school, school and high-school youth. The texts and stories are created entirely by himself, with the help of his former student and co-worker Jana Kovaè Valdés. The series of awards he received during the years of his artistic and pedagogical work prove that the pantomime is not anything special. It is simply- theatre.
